The International Thomas Aquinas Society was officially founded by means of a deed executed by Notary Francesco Cavallaro on 27 May 1978 at the Dominican Convent of Santa Sabina in Rome, Piazza Pietro d'Illiria 1, Generalate of the Dominican Order. Following the reading and approval of the Statute, the deed was signed by the following founder members: the Most Rev. Father Vincent de Couesnongle, Master General of the Dominican Order, the Most Rev. Father Aniceto Fernandez Alonso, Ex-Master General of the Dominican Order, Prof. Fathers Abelardo Lobato Casado of the Pontifical University "Saint Thomas Aquinas", Prof. Father Benedetto Lorenzo D'Amore of the Pontifical University "Saint Thomas Aquinas", Father William Liam Walsh of Rome, Assistant to the Master of the Dominican Order for intellectual life, Father Juan José Gallego Salvadores of Rome, Assistant to the Master of the Dominican Order for the Province of Spain, Prof. Father José Salguero of Rome, Rector of the Pontifical University "Saint Thomas Aquinas", Father Edward McDonald of Rome, Auditor of the Dominican Order, Prof. Father Alfred William Wilder of the Pontifical University "Saint Thomas Aquinas", Father Agostino Sabato Giordano of Salerno, ex-Provincial of the Dominican Order, Prof. Father Cornelio Fabro of the University of Perugia, Prof. Rigobello of the University of Rome, and Prof. Battista mondin of the Pontifical Urbanian University of Rome.

The Assembly of the founder members appointed the Most Rev. Father Vincent George de Couesnongle as President of the Society, and Father Edward McDonald as its Administrator.
